Formal entity details — legal name, registration, and jurisdiction — are provided to clients in engagement letters and will be published here upon completion of the practice’s current administrative arrangements. Regulatory positioning

Descent Legal operates as a private advisory practice specializing in ancestry research and citizenship-by-descent applications. We coordinate with licensed local counsel in relevant jurisdictions for legal representation before consulates and civil registries. We do not provide legal advice on matters requiring licensed practice in jurisdictions where we are not admitted.

Content on this website — including country pages, articles, and family stories — is general information about ancestry research and nationality law. It is not legal advice, does not create an advisor–client relationship, and should not be relied upon as a substitute for advice on your specific circumstances. Nationality and citizenship rules are date-sensitive: they change through legislation, decrees, court decisions, and administrative practice, sometimes with little notice. Descriptions on this site reflect our general understanding at the time of writing, and current requirements should always be confirmed before acting.

Family stories published on this site are anonymized, composite accounts. They illustrate the character of the work and are not presented as independently verifiable case histories or as promises of outcome.

Privacy policy

We aim to collect as little personal data as a working practice can. This policy is written to align with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and comparable frameworks.

What we collect

• Correspondence. If you write to[email protected], we receive the personal data you choose to include — typically names, family history, and documents. This site has no contact form and no user accounts.
• Technical logs. The server hosting this site may record standard access logs (IP address, requested page, browser identifier) for security and operations, retained briefly and not used to profile visitors.
• Fonts. Pages load typefaces from Google Fonts; when they do, your browser requests font files from Google’s servers, which involves processing of your IP address by Google. No other third-party service is embedded in this site.

How we use correspondence

Correspondence is used solely to assess and respond to your inquiry and, where an engagement follows, to perform it. The legal bases are your request prior to entering a contract, the contract itself, and our legitimate interest in maintaining records of our professional work. Family-history material is inherently sensitive; we treat all of it as confidential, share it only with the vetted researchers, investigators, and local counsel needed for your matter, and instruct them to the same standard.

International transfers, retention, and your rights

Because this work is international by nature, correspondence may be processed in the jurisdictions where research and filings occur, with appropriate safeguards. We retain inquiry correspondence only as long as needed to respond and for reasonable professional record-keeping, and engagement files per our contractual and legal obligations. You may request access, correction, or deletion of your personal data, or object to its processing, by writing to[email protected]. If you are in the EU or a similar jurisdiction, you may also complain to your data protection authority.

This website sets no cookies — none essential, none optional — and uses no analytics, tracking, advertising, or chat technologies. If that ever changes for a strictly essential technical reason, this notice will say so first.
